Proceed to Maddur from Bangalore and
stroll around the place for a while. Among the important temples here are
the Narasimha temple of the Hoysala period and Varadaraja temple- an early
Chola or pre-Chola Structure.
18 km from Maddur, there is a
village that has now been developed into a bird sanctuary, Kokkare- Bellur
which attracts Cranes, Pelicans and other large birds from as far away as
Australia, Africa and Europe.
From Maddur proceed to
Srirangapatna. It is just 16 km from Mysore City (123 km from Bangalore) and
can be reached by rail and road, Srirangapatna is an island fortress
encircled by river. Cauvery. High stone walls and moats enclose temples,
palaces and great mosque.
Daria Daulat Bagh with its delicate
lattice work and frescoes was the Summer palace of Tipu Sultan, the
ligendary Tiger of Mysore, who defied the might of the British. Nearby, are
the tombs of Tipu and his celebrated father Hyder Ali and the famous Sri
Ranganatha Temple which gives this charming town its name. Other interesting
stops include Royal Mosque and Wellesley Bridge.
4km away from
Srirangapatna is Ranganathittu, a bird sanctuary developed around rocky
islets on the river Cauvery and covered with ancient mammoth trees. The best
season to visit this bird sanctuary is between May and November.
